Ad details

Sterling Edwards was a West Coast industrialist who was one of the early leaders in the post-WWII sports car movement. He participated in early road races at Pebble Beach and around California in a car of his own design.

The first Edwards special won Best of Show at the first Pebble Beach Concours. Working with legendary fabricator Phil Remington (whose later laurels range from Scarabs and Cobras to Dan Gurney's Eagles) Edwards later conceived a small series of cars with fiberglass bodies called the Edwards America. Based on a 100" wheelbase Henry J frame, this car, the first of only five cars built (a sixth was never completed) was a convertible with Oldsmobile V-8 power.

It is this car and its importance -- one of the first sports cars with a fiberglass body, built by one of the pioneers of the West Coast sports car movement -- cannot be over-emphasized. All the Edwards Americas are tracked by Bob Whitmer, a former Edwards Engineering employee and the history of this car is known from new.

It is one of only two convertibles, the only one on the short 100" chassis. Finished in Blue with Blue and Tan leather upholstery and a Tan cloth top and boot cover, it was restored some years ago and comes with a huge book of history, documentation, a complete parts list copies of correspondence among Edwards America owners (one of them being the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles.) It has completed the Colorado Grand and was the winner of an Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance Amelia Award. Its 324 cubic inch Oldsmobile Rocket overhead valve V-8 drives through an Oldsmobile Hydra-Matic automatic transmission.

It is a singularly important piece of American sports car and California special history, the subject of a Collectible Automobile magazine feature in December 2002 and featured in the Automobile Quarterly history of Sterling Edwards and his specials. Better still, Sterling Edwards' good taste and feeling for design created an exceptionally attractive, balanced and refined automobile aesthetically comparable with the best Italian coachbuilders of the period. Its appearance, performance and history will make it one of the most important components of any collection.
